Polmontfest, making festivals sustainable
We at the hub love a festival in fact the management team have a music festival to thank for finding us our amazing bookings co`ordinator,
But are festivals sustainable? Friends of the earth give great advice on how we make festivals more sustainable, Ecotricity have invented what they call grid fairies which are giant batteries capable of powering a weekend long large festival, and numerous sports campaigners like the green runners, Protect Our Winters (POW) and chapions for the earth working tirelessly to get the carbon footprint and bad sponsorship out of sports
we have hosted lots of seasonal festive events, such as our -burns nights, christmas fairs, community get togethers, our apple day festival, the bike fest and the great get together.Over the last two years, outdoor events and festivals in Scotland have faced many challenges, from extreme weather events, excessive heat, to heavy winds & rainfall, impacting their operations, we are fortunate to have our indoor space and have rescued a few local events from cancelation due to weather, the associated costs and the audience’s experience are being impacted more and more. Alongside rising production costs, event organisers have to plan for ever-more likely severe weather scenarios and increase their site’s resilience, while the lasting cost of living crisis is continuously impacting audiences and is still a major factor for people’s ability to access live music (particularly for young people).
We aim to address this at polmont communitty hub be planning in our events adaptation and ressilience towards climate change and extreme weather events, we are redisgning the whole site towards this and our wee festival is our chance to inform the public how we do this, we originally planned a much bigger festival for our community, but have had to scale it down partially to enable us to plan whats achievable next year, not that our future is properly secured into community ownership wwe can start making this an annual event,
